When ‘ileya’ is over, Lake Rice will still be sold

If there exists doubts previously over the authenticity of the availability and sale of Lake Rice by Lagos State government, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr Olayiwola Onasanya told Food & Beverages,  “There will not be a gap in the sales of Lake Rice even after the  festivities ”

Onasanya assured, “Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has been gracious to provide sufficient financial resources to make the product available at all local government area offices in the state and other government designated points of sale.

“We are aware that Lagosians want to have the product all round the season and for this reason, we have made sufficient tonnes available between now and Christmas; we assure the residence that from now till end of the year, Lake Rice will be available for purchase “,said Onasanya.

On how to get the product stress-free, Onasanya reiterated, “those who want to make purchases would have to either pay through the Bank and take their teller to the local government secretariat or make purchases at the designated points by using the ATM cards on POS”, said Onasanya.

He explained that the need for proper accountability in the sales of the rice necessitates the introduction of paying into government treasury.

“Right now, the arrangement is that Lake Rice is being sold at government level but with time, it will become a big business “, Onasanya assured.

The permanent Secretary also disclosed that the planned rice mill scheduled to become operational by 2018 is nearing completion.

According to the PS, “once work is completed on the rice mill, we will flood the markets with the natural,  nutritious product änd by that time,  anybody can get the product from any where in the state”, averred Onasanya.
