Parishioners of Saint Peter’s (Anglican) Church Iseri-Oke, begins celebration of 135 years christian evangelism in Iseriland. The oldest church in the Diocese of Lagos West, Church of All Nigeria, on Sunday, July 14, coloured the ancient town with Carnival-like evangelism to signify start-off of its 135-years of preaching Christ.
Led by its large youth population closely followed by the adults and aged, the carnival tagged: “Walk for Jesus” saw the congregation dancing, singing with its church Boys Brigade band providing the tunes while they went through the streets distributing tracts and flyers signaling christian evangelism.
The community outreach signalled the many activities to commemorate 135 years of evangelism in Iseriland. Saint Peter’s Iseri was founded in 1884 by the then Olofin of Iseri, Oba Taiwo Olowo 1 after he was crowned the ruler of Iseri Olofin.
The church according to history, opened the doors of christian evangelism into Iseri-Olofin which was predominantly a rustic community with its various traditional mode of worship.
At inception, the church was built purposely to encourage merchants who were travelling through the Ogun River have a place to berth and worship especially on Sundays, hence its closeness to the River which was the Port at the time.
But due to the presence of the church which also brought about the introduction of education, and the fact that the ruler of the land and his household were Christians, it was not too long before some other families joined him to worship at the church.
The church over the years has grown in leaps and bounds but not without challenges.
To celebrate 135 years of Christian Evangelism in Iseri-Olofin and in the Diocese of Lagos West, the parishioners of have lined up series of activities starting with the carnival and a 3-day powerful revival from Wednesday featuring Evangelist Lerry John Abiodun. There would be a film show on Thursday and a NIght of Praise and Worship on Friday, July 19 2019 featuring the Ikeja Archdeaconry Choir and renowned guest Artiste: Evangelist Jumoke Adeyanju (Eniti O ba moore) in the church auditorium.
