Court Turns Down Bail Application in Sex-for-Mark Case

Federal High Court Osogbo, Osun State has turned down the bail application by dismissed Professor of Accountancy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife enmeshed in sex-for-mark case and scandal over insufficient evidence to back claims.

Represented by six Counsels before Justice Maureen Oyetenu, Professor Akindele through his defence counsel, Francis Omotosho  had prayed the court to grant him bail to leave prison custody and attend trial from home.

Counsel to Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Afolabi Oluwatoyin provided a counter affidavit  to oppose the bail application.

Justice Oyetenu in turning down the bail application for the sex-for-mark case, noted that the facts of the counter affidavit deposed by the ICPC counsel were quite weighty and therefore asked the prosecution to produce evidence to back up the claims at next adjourned sitting.

She then ordered the defendant, Professor Akindele, to be remanded in Ilesa Prison until December 17 the next adjourned date when hearing continues in his bail application.

Ex-University don was last April found guilty of the accusation of demanding sex-for -marks by an investigation panel set up by the University Governing Council and he was subsequently dismissed from the institution and handed over to ICPC for prosecution.
Akindele was alleged by one of his Masters Students, Ms Monica Osagie in the Department, to have requested for five rounds of sex to change a failed subject to pass.
Osagie it was reported lured Akindele to enable her get clear evidence to nail him for corrupt tendencies and prove of sexual intimidation and harassment.
Outside the court premises were young female activists, many who were students, decked in orange with various placards to give solidarity for their fellow female student victim, Monica Osagie, especially since the sex-for-mark case is coming within the 16-days of activism against Gender Based Violence.
