Bloggers Guild Holds Inaugural Lecture on Fake News

The Guild Of Professional Bloggers Of Nigeria (GPBN) will hold the Maiden edition of annual lectures on combating menace of fake news in the cyberspace come Saturday, October 13 in Lagos.

The lecture which will have six great speakers will have Honourable Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed as its Special Guest and Head of Department, Mass communication, University of Lagos, Professor Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika as chairperson of the occasion.

Guest speaker at the event is Barrister Festus Keyamo, Human Rights Activist and Crusader while the Keynote Speaker is National Publicity Secretary of People’s Democratic Party (PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan.

Other notable speakers are: Head, Marketing, Diamond Bank, Ms. Chiamaka Udunze; Corporate Affairs Advisor, NB Plc, Kufre Ekanem, Head External Affairs, UBA, Nasir Ramon Olanrewaju and Basil Udotai-Managing Partner, Technology Advisor,  ICT Lawyer & Consultants .

Speaking to the theme of the Lecture, President of the Guild, Chris Kehinde Nwandu noted that the recent developments in the wake of political activities in the country in which the cyberspace has been turned to the arena of progating falsehood and fake news, all eyes have shifted to practitioners who use the cyberspace as tool for their job to defend the profession.

Nwandu would be using the occasion to share some of his 2015 experience at the Ikoyi Prisons on account of a harmless reshared post on facebook.

Speakers expected to grace the event would be breaking down some of the intricacies in the ICT world that make users of the cyberspace vulnerable to falsehood while some participants would also relieve their experiences with fake news as peddled through cyberspace.

Other stakeholders from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Institute of Journalism, students of Journalism, as well captains in the  industry are expected to grace the programme slated for 11am at Radisson Blu Hotel,  GRA,  Ikeja, Lagos.

The Guild of Professional Bloggers of Nigeria was founded in 2016 as a platform to bring practitioners from various backgrounds including Journalists together and share trainings on ethical standards and best practices in using the cyberspace as tool for information, education and knowledge.

According to Nwandu, “Blogging may be an emerging trend in Nigeria, but it is a career that is practiced with credibility all over the world and we cannot be different”.
